An anthropologist of South Asia from Kalimpong, her research has elaborated on the interconnected histories of the Himalayas. Thematically, her work elaborates on trade networks, markets, infrastructure (roads, railways etc.), colonialism, frontiers and the history of people and places. Through Kache (Tibetan Muslim) community, her work re-examines categories of citizenship, belonging, identity, home etc., and her work on Kalimpong engages with different forms of urban place-making. She is the recipient of prestigious fellowships like Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, Inlaks, Fulbright, and Rajeev Gandhi National Fellowships for her Masters and Doctoral studies. Currently, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Aarhus University (Anthropology), Anisa received her PhD from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai).
Having made documentaries, songs, and photographs and experimenting with sound as part of multimodal research, Anisa is developing new and innovative approaches to communication. Her unique training in different disciplines (commerce, marketing, media and cultural studies, social sciences) and familiarity with institutes and geographies (Kalimpong, Kolkata, Mumbai, Germany, U.K, U.S.A and Denmark) helps her engage with multiple interdisciplinary works. Ultimately, she is interested in developing methodologies that cross disciplinary boundaries and helps us understand one's research queries.
